Jamaica's Largest Supermarket Chain to Install New POS Chain-wide

KINGSTON, Jamaica -- Following in-store testing which began in December, Super Plus Food Stores, Jamaica's largest supermarket chain, began a 35-store, 1,000-'lane rollout of a new POS system that's expected to be completed by year-end 2006.

Super Plus selected the Epson IM-320 POS terminal and ECRS's Catapult Enterprise automation solution for a chainwide rollout. ECRS will use the Epson IM-320 terminal to replace Super Plus Food Store's existing POS hardware components.

"We selected ECRS's Catapult retail software platform after our extensive in-store testing resulted in dramatically increased transaction throughput provided by Catapult's flexible, reliable design," said Richard Chen, co-owner of Super Plus. "ECRS recommended the Epson terminal as a compact, all-in-one solution that works seamlessly with the Catapult application. This complete hardware/software solution is allowing us to provide better customer service while at the same time lowering our long-term support and maintenance costs. The rollout is going very smoothly."

As Jamaica's largest supermarket chain, Super Plus handles more than 180,000 customer transactions per week. The Catapult retail platform is designed to meet the needs of high-volume operation, with options such as centralized pricing and promotions, storewide and centralized reporting, POS, price checker, DSD, and self-checkout.

The combined Epson/ECRS POS solution provides Super Plus with a level of flexibility and simplicity that allows the retailer to scale up quickly while lowering total cost of ownership. Epson’s IM-320 is completely integrated with Catapult, and includes the cashier and customer display, CPU, credit card swipe, and printer, all provided in one small footprint.

According to ECRS president Pete Catoe, "By pairing Catapult with the Epson IM-320, we were able to provide Super Plus Food Stores with a turnkey solution that offers excellent functionality and world-class reliability at an affordable price."

Super Plus has stores and 2,500 employees across Jamaica. The Chen family operates the chain, with eight of their nine children carrying on the family tradition. The company is a member of the Independent Grocer's Alliance, the largest association of supermarkets worldwide, which is designed to create economies of scale in procurement for its members. Super Plus has its own distribution center, a fleet of trucks, a line of Super Plus branded products, and an online shopping Web site.
