Industry Mourns Loss of H-E-B's Catanzaro
SAN ANTONIO - Rich Catanzaro, director of seafood merchandising, procurement and new product development at H.E. Butt Grocery Co., was killed last weekend after losing control of his snowmobile at a turn in a trail and striking a tree while vacationing with his family in Breckinridge, Colo. His wife, Karen Catanzaro, suffered injuries in the accident and is listed in critical condition in a Denver hospital.
Catanzaro, a 30-year veteran of the seafood industry and a 17-year supermarket veteran, was considered a true visionary in his field, representing the U.S. retail seafood industry in a varsity of capacities from Europe to Asia to South America.
Catanzaro recently was a keynote speaker at the Boston Seafood Show, and was a member of the board of directors for the National Fisheries Institute, for which he served as chairman of the retail committee.
NFI will honor Catanzaro at its upcoming spring conference in San Antonio.
"Rich was a leader in our community and was helpful to me personally in helping bring about some of the changes we envision for NFI," said NFI president John Connelly. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Catanzaro family. This is a great loss for the industry and we extend our sympathy to H-E-B."
