Ikea to Increase Branded Food Offering

SWEDEN -- Global furniture retailer Ikea here is planning to roll out a line of private label food products in its outlets beginning next year, according to published reports. The new venture builds on the retailer's success with Swedish-inspired restaurants and food stores located in its stores.

Ikea's Food Markets currently carry about 150 Swedish products, but only a small amount of those are sold under the Ikea name.

The retailer estimates that Ikea-branded products could make up 30 percent of the groceries it sells by 2007, according to reports. The private label line would also bring packaged versions of some of Ikea's popular restaurant recipes, including Swedish dishes such as meatballs, herrings, and crispbreads.

There are currently about 216 Ikea stores in 33 countries/territories, according to the company's Web site. The Ikea Group owns 192 stores in 23 countries, while the other 24 stores are owned and run by franchisees outside the Ikea Group in 15 countries/territories. Twenty-two of its stores are in the U.S.
