Home Plate

What’s on the plate for deli operators this month?

Exactly.

March is National Nutrition Month, which means that it’s the time of year when what’s on consumers’ plates is on the minds of food growers and manufacturers, retailers and health professionals and educators.

Officially, National Nutrition Month is a nutrition and education program sponsored by Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (formerly the American Dietetic Association). Over the past several years, that theme has been picked up by others in the food and grocery industry as a way to promote better-for-you foods and instill knowledge about the importance of balance and moderation in people’s diets.

The theme of this year’s National Nutrition Month is “Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day.” According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the 2013 campaign is designed to encourage consumers to create and follow a healthful eating centered on personal health concerns.

In keeping with National Nutrition Month and its theme, a host of new products, promotions and resources are being rolled out this spring.

And, like spring training in baseball, it’s all about the home plate.
