HHS Secretary Visits Bridgeton Schnucks Store

ST. LOUIS -- As part of a fact-finding mission aimed at gathering information for a report on the kinds of products imported from different countries, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt and Food and Drug Administration commissioner Andrew von Eschenbach yesterday visited the Bridgeton, Mo. Schnucks Market.

Scott Schnuck, chairman and c.e.o. of the family-owned grocery company, hosted the officials on a tour of store operations while sharing information on safety aspects of the food supply chain. Dianna Pasley, Schnucks' director of food safety, was also on hand to provide information and answer questions.

On July 18, President Bush asked Secretary Leavitt to chair a working group focused on promoting the safety of imported products. The group is conducting an across-the-board review looking at all kinds of products imported from many different countries, and will report back to the president in 60 days. The Missouri visit is one of many in a fact-finding tour to gather information for that report.
