Harris Teeter to Install Biometric Payment Systems Chainwide

MATTHEWS, N.C. -- Harris Teeter is the latest of the larger regional operators installing biometric payment systems at the checkouts chainwide.

The system will be installed by biometric solutions provider Pay By Touch, San Francisco, which last month inked a deal to supply all of Albertsons Jewel-Osco stores with the technology. "Harris Teeter shoppers lead busy lives with hectic schedules," said Fred Morganthall, president of Harris Teeter. "We are committed to providing our customers with innovative solutions to help make their lives and shopping experiences faster and more secure. With Pay By Touch, shoppers can leave their wallets and purses behind and quickly pay for groceries with the touch of a finger."

The Pay By Touch system uses a finger scan to authorize an electronic transaction from a customer's existing checking account, and will automatically honor Harris Teeter's VIC loyalty card.

Harris Teeter operates 145 stores in North and South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida and has 15,000 associates. Last year it saw sales of $2.64 billion.
