Harris Teeter to Build Store on Safeway Site in Maryland

MATTHEWS, N.C. -- Southeastern chain Harris Teeter here continues to set its sights northward, as the retailer prepares to build a new store in Columbia, Md. beginning this summer, according to published reports. The new unit, which will reportedly be located on the site of a Safeway store set to be demolished, would be one of 19 new stores Harris Teeter has planned for 2006.

Harris Teeter, which operates 145 stores, has been fairly aggressive in other entering other Washington suburbs. The retailer currently operates nine stores in the Washington area. This will be its first location in Columbia, and its second location in Maryland following a store that's expected to open in Darnestown this summer, according to the Washington Post.

The Columbia store will be located in Kings Contrivance Village Center. Harris Teeter signed a deal to build the store once the lease for a Safeway store there expires at the end of June, according to the Washington Post. A Safeway spokesman told the newspaper that Harris Teeter outbid Safeway for the lease. The Safeway and an adjacent vacant building will be torn down to construct the new supermarket.
