Hannaford, Upromise Helping Shoppers Save for College
SCARBOROUGH, Maine -- Hannaford Supermarkets here said yesterday it was taking part in Upromise, a free Needham, Mass.-based service that helps families earn money back for college when they buy hundreds of products made by from participating manufacturers. Shoppers at any Hannaford location will now be able to benefit from the program.
"Customers can pick up a Hannaford Upromise key tag at any Hannaford store," explained Hannaford spokeswoman Caren Epstein in a statement. "To join, customers visit http://www.hannaford.com/upromise to enroll and register their key tag. Once registered, each time the customer shops at Hannaford and purchases participating products, the cashier will scan their key tag to have the eligible contributions automatically added to their Upromise account."
Epstein added that customers who enroll a Hannaford Upromise key tag in their Upromise account by April 30 could potentially win one of three $5,000 Upromise Scholarships to be deposited directly into winners' Upromise accounts. There's no cost to join Upromise.
Family members or friends can contribute to any Upromise account. Participants can open accounts for any future college student--themselves, a minor, even an unborn child. For a complete list of eligible products, customers can find a brochure at any Hannaford store or visit the retailer's Web site.
Delhaize-owned Hannaford Bros. Co. operates 151 supermarkets and food-and-drug combination stores in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, and Massachusetts.
The Upromise Services division includes a loyalty service that lets families automatically save money for college while making purchases at more than 20,000 grocery and drug stores, 14,000 gas stations, 8,000 restaurants, thousands of retail stores and more than 350 online shopping sites. Upromise's partners include Citi, Coca-Cola, ExxonMobil Corp., Kimberly-Clark, McDonald's, JCPenney.com, LandsEnd.com, and Sears.com. Over six million people have joined the program nationwide representing the biggest private source of college aid in the United States.
