Hannaford Unfolds Store Brand Microwave Steam Bags

SCARBOROUGH, Maine -- Hannaford Bros. Co. here has introduced what it calls "the next generation of steam packaging" -- quart and half-gallon sizes of microwave steam bags, under the Hannaford private label, at all of its stores.

"This technology makes it easier for consumers to get their recommended number of servings of vegetables and steam their favorite foods, such as seafood, poultry, vegetables, and fruit, in a matter of minutes," said Hannaford category manager Edward Crockett in a statement. "Making these bags available to consumers is also consistent with our goal of making nutrition, wellness, and health easier for the consumer."

The patented microporous venting system of the bags permits up to 10 ounces of fresh vegetables to cook in less than four minutes in a 1,000-watt microwave oven, according to the chain. Additionally, the product retains more of foods' natural flavors, texture, and nutritional value by regulating the amount of steam that escapes through the venting system, and a zipper feature on the bag lets home chefs preseason foods before steaming them, Hannaford said.

The steam bags shouldn't be used for red meat, as "it's not a technology geared toward red meat, which you normally wouldn't steam," explained Hannaford spokeswoman Rebecca Howes. Cooking times may vary, so consumers need to check the instructions on the box.

The quart bags retail for $2.99 and the half-gallon bags retail for $3.99, both in 10-count packages.

Kansas City, Mo.-based Global Source Packaging, Inc. (GSPI) distributes the bags.

Delhaize-owned Hannaford Bros. Co. operates 158 stores under the Hannaford Supermarket and Hannaford Supermarket and Pharmacy banners in Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Massachusetts, and Vermont.
