Grocery Helps Rite Aid Boost May Same-store Sales
CAMP HILL, Pa. -- Rite Aid Corp. here, the No. 3 drugstore chain in the U.S. market, said yesterday same-store sales in May were up 4 percent, driven by sales of prescription medications, with some help from grocery categories as well.
Pharmacy same-store sales rose 4.9 percent and same-store sales from general merchandise items such as food, snacks and cosmetics were up 2.3 percent.
Total sales in the period rose 3.4 percent to $1.68 billion, the company said.
For the first quarter ended June 3, 2006, same store sales increased 3.6 percent, consisting of a 4.4 percent pharmacy same-store sales increase, and a 2.1 percent increase in front-end same-store sales.
Total drug store sales for the quarter increased 2.7 percent to $4.3 billion, from $4.2 billion in last yearís first quarter. Prescription revenue accounted for 64.3 percent of total drugstore sales, and third party prescription revenue was 95.2 percent of pharmacy sales.
Rite Aid Corp. had annual revenues of $17.3 billion last year. On June 3, 2006, Rite Aid operated 3,321 stores, compared to 3,354 stores operated in the like period a year ago.
