Goddard Named Prez/CEO of WinCo Foods; Long Retires

BOISE, Idaho - There's been a major changing of the guard at regional independent WinCo Foods here. Steven L. Goddard has been named president and c.e.o. of, replacing William D. Long, who has retired from the company; and Rich Charrier has been named e.v.p. and c.o.o., replacing Scott R. Preece, who also retired.

Goddard joined the company in May 1998 as v.p. of produce, after having spent more than 20 years employed in various produce related positions with Kroger, Safeway, and Scrivner/Food 4 Less. He was promoted to e.v.p., retail operations in 2003, then to c.o.o. in 2005, and was elected to the board of directors in July 2006. He was promoted to president in October 2006.

Charrier joined the company in September 1975 as a store level clerk. He progressed to store manager and has managed stores in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. He was promoted to v.p., produce in 2003, to v.p., retail operations in 2005, and to his present position, e.v.p. and c.o.o. in October 2006.

Long joined the company as a store manager in 1968. He was promoted to president in 1978, and became chairman, president, and c.e.o. in 1985, when he led a buy out of the company from its founding family and set up the company with an employee ownership structure utilizing an ESOP as the primary ownership and pension vehicle. With Preece, he guided the growth of the company from a retail sales volume of $187 million in 1985 to sales approaching $3 billion in 2006. Long retired on December 31, but will continue his service as non-executive chairman of the board.

Preece joined the company in store management in 1969. He was promoted to area supervisor in 1979, to v.p. of the company's Portland division in 1983, was elected to the board of directors in 1985, and was promoted to c.o.o. in 1990. He became president of the company in 2001. He retired in October 2006, and continues his service as non-executive vice chairman of the board.

Headquartered in Boise, Idaho, WinCo Foods is an employee owned company comprised of more than 9,000 employees operating 54 discount supermarkets, three distribution centers, and four offices in its five state operating area of Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, and Idaho.
