GMA Introduces Manufacturing Excellence Share Group

The Grocery Manufacturers Association said on Friday it has established a Manufacturing Excellence Share Group that will concentrate on the development and promotion of best practices related to the manufacture of consumer packaged goods.

"As industry trends toward dollar savings via increased efficiency continue, manufacturing operations are positioned to contribute very positively to the corporate bottom line," noted GMA s.v.p. for industry affairs Stephen Sibert. "We anticipate a focus on environmental sustainability, sustainable processes, outsourcing, and other key strategic initiatives to evolve from the manufacturing discipline. This share group will serve as a laboratory for new ideas where manufacturers can develop and present successful practices that foster greater innovation and efficiency within their companies."

The share group will convene quarterly. Its first meeting was on Oct. 7 at GMA headquarters in Washington, with an agenda that dealt with key performance indicators related to manufacturing efficiency.

The share group will also focus on a broad assortment of manufacturing issues, among them resource optimization leadership and talent development, environmental sustainability, and outsourcing, according to the trade association.

David Donnan, director of Chicago-based Bridge Strategy Group LLC, and a CPG manufacturing and operations vet, will be the group's ongoing facilitator.
