Giant-Landover Reopens Remodeled D.C. Store

LANDOVER, Md. -- After a five-month overhaul, Giant Food, LLC here reopened a new replacement store in the Van Ness shopping center in Washington, D.C. late last week. The retailer enlarged the store from 18,345 square feet to 33,576 square feet, expanding the produce, meat, seafood, flower, bakery, and deli departments.

Additionally, Giant is hiring 100 new associates, bringing the number of staff positions at the store to 135.

Jamie Miller, a spokesman for Giant, told Progressive Grocer that the remodel was "one of several" that the grocer was carrying out over the next 12 months, but he had no further information on the remodel program.

Giant's e.v.p. and g.m., Bill Holmes, in a statement: "The newly expanded store will offer our shoppers an exceptional selection of prepared foods, quality perishable and nonperishable products, and a friendly staff dedicated to customer service."

Besides being fully accessible to people with disabilities, the Van Ness store now includes a self-service coffee bar and café with a seating area and several self-service checkout lanes. Among the other new features are:

--A Nature's Promise health section carrying natural cereal, soy milk, beverages, snacks, condiments, and nutritional bars, to name just a few products. For the March 23 opening, Giant offered many of the items at low prices.

--An ethnic food section with a variety of Hispanic, Thai, and Oriental food selections, including Maseca Corn Flour and Giant's new Mi Casa brand for Hispanic customers, ready-to-eat Thai entrees, and Asian condiments.

--A produce department including locally grown produce, specialty produce, and organic produce, in addition to ready-to-eat "Step Saver" fruit and salad items, a wide selection of packaged salads, and a salad station and soup bar with more than 85 items.

--A service deli offering prepared Boston Market side dishes, gourmet salads, an enhanced Italian foods section, rotisserie chickens, and customized sandwiches. Additional features include a hot food bar and an appetizer bar with chicken wings, mozzarella sticks, and jalapeno peppers. Customers can also choose from among more than 300 varieties of gourmet cheeses.

--An in-store bakery with an assortment of freshly baked products, including more than 15 varieties of artisan breads, along with cakes and other items baked on the premises. A new gourmet cookie case displays hand-decorated specialty message and character cookies.

--A meat department carrying USDA Choice beef, Grade A poultry, marinated meats, and fully prepared dishes such as marinated beef kebabs, stuffed pork chops, and stuffed flank steak offered through Giant's "Step Saver" program.

Additionally, the new store offers Western Union money orders and wire transfers, Rug Doctor rentals, an ATM, Giant Gift Cards, phone cards, and postage stamps.

Ahold USA-owned Giant Food LLC operates 191 supermarkets in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia, employing more than 25,000 associates. Giant stores in Delaware operate under the Super G name. Included within the 191 stores are 162 full-service pharmacies.
