Giant-Landover Offers ‘Passport to Nutrition’ to Educators

Giant Food LLC is rolling out the latest version of its “Passport to Nutrition” program to organizations that educate and work with children, including schools, summer camps and scouting groups. The interactive program provides the necessary tools to teach kids about nutrition and living healthy lifestyles both at home and at school.

“At Giant, we believe it is part of our responsibility to help customers navigate healthy choices, especially for kids,” noted Lisa Coleman, nutritionist at the Landover, Md.-based grocery chain. “We have a long legacy of providing information and helpful programs, from [product-labeling system] Healthy Ideas to in-store signage.”

According to Giant Food spokesman Jamie Miller, in response to a query by Progressive Grocer: “Several changes have been made to Giant’s Passport to Nutrition program – these are the three most significant modifications: First and foremost, we updated Passport to Nutrition to reflect USDA’s new MyPlate standards and guidelines. In addition, we redesigned the program to reach older children, ages eight to 12. The earlier program was focused on children ages six to 10. Lastly, we revamped the way in which the community could access Passport to Nutrition. Previously, the program was only accessible via our website. … There’s also a DVD that helps reinforce Passport to Nutrition.”

Teachers and organizational leaders can obtain a complete Passport to Nutrition kit by e-mailing a request to [email protected]. Additional healthy-eating resources are available online.

A division of Ahold USA, Giant Food operates 169 supermarkets in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia, and employs about 20,000 associates.
