Giant Landover Offers ‘Free Fruit for Kids’

Giant Food LLC has introduced the Free Fruit for Kids program in all 169 of its stores. Under the initiative, the supermarket chain’s produce departments offer free fruit to kids ages 10 and under, as a way to provide healthy snacks for kids while their parents or caregivers shop.

“Giant is always pleased to provide opportunities for healthy eating, whether it’s at home or in the store,” said Lisa Coleman, lead nutritionist for Landover, Md.-based Giant Food. “This program is one more way Giant helps children consume enough fruits and vegetables, further emphasizing our commitment to helping customers of all ages eat well and make healthy choices for themselves and their families.”

In-store signage and produce displays lead customers to the free fruit. Giant is offering bananas first, followed by mandarin oranges in the fall. Customers can take one piece of fruit per child ages 10 and under.

An Ahold Delhaize company based in Landover, Md., Giant Food operates supermarkets in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia, employing about 20,000 associates.
