Giant Landover Marks 80th Anniversary
For its 80th anniversary on Feb. 6, Giant Food LLC will celebrate with shoppers and community members by offering free birthday cake at all 169 of its stores in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia.
“Our customers remain at the heart of our business, and we love helping our customers save money, save time and eat well,” noted Gordon Reid, president of the Landover, Md.-based Ahold USA grocery store chain.
Back in 1936, N.H. Cohen and Sam Lehrman opened what the banner calls Washington D.C.’s first grocery store, kicking off “an 80-year legacy of quality, service, and value that has spanned generations and continues to this day,” Giant Food said, indicating its long history of supporting surrounding communities through food donations, products and services promoting wellness, and eco-friendly store designs, while maintaining high standards in customer service, technology and product assortment.
Giant Food plans to highlight important events from its storied past throughout 2016. Starting this month, customers will encounter 80th anniversary-themed promotions and special events, and a new commemorative logo (pictured) will be prominently displayed during the year.
Other grocers celebrating milestone birthdays in 2016 include Wegmans, which turned 100, and Kings Super Markets, also 80.
