Giant-Landover Celebrating Black History Month
LANDOVER, Md. -- Giant Food, LLC here is marking Black History Month with the release of its 14th annual "Profiles in Excellence" brochure, which highlights significant accomplishments and milestones of noted African-Americans. The brochure is available throughout the month of February. The grocer will also celebrate the occasion through a partnership with Kraft Foods and through various events for its associates and communities.
"Profiles in Excellence" this year features African-Americans who are distinguished in the health-and-wellness field. Several current Giant associates who work in this field are included, too, such as consumer advisor Andrea Astrachan. The retailer distributes the brochures at no charge in its stores, as well as providing free copies to schools and community organizations.
Giant's partnership with Kraft consists of a promotion to raise funds for the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Foundation, whose aim is to build a memorial to the slain civil rights leader on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Shoppers who buy Kraft items at select Giant stores will receive a free Black History Month Food and Family Magazine featuring product coupons, recipes, and healthy-living tips. Additionally, as part of the promotion Kraft is contributing $75,000 to the "Build the Dream" Memorial Fund.
Other activities scheduled at Giant include an opportunity for associates to take part in a "Salute to Heritage" recipe contest in which they can win prizes by submitting original African-American-inspired recipes, and speakers invited to the grocer's corporate offices to discuss African-American history and culture. Also, Giant's diversity staff is available to speak at community organizations marking Black History Month.
Employing 25,000 associates, Ahold USA-owned Giant Food operates 191 supermarkets, including 161 full-service pharmacies, in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia. Giant stores in Delaware operate under the Super G banner.
