Giant Food Makes Administrative Cuts
WASHINGTON - Ahold-owned Giant Food of Landover, Md. laid off 270 administrative employees last week in another effort to consolidate operations with Quincy, Mass.-based sister company Stop & Shop Supermarket Co., a spokesman told the Washington Post.
Most of the affected employees are middle managers whose jobs are already being performed by Stop & Shop employees, said Giant spokesman Barry F. Scher.
Among the employees at Giant's headquarters in Landover and other offices, 430 have been offered positions at Giant and 38 have been offered jobs at Stop & Shop, he said.
Employees have about a month to accept or reject the offers, Scher noted, adding that the company is "confident the majority will accept the positions."
Beginning this summer, several of Giant's administrative departments, including information technology, marketing, purchasing and accounting, will move to Quincy, according to the report. Its labor relations, consumer affairs, real estate and store operations departments will remain in Landover.
Giant also announced last week that it would adopt Stop & Shop's product labels, cash registers and checkout stations to increase efficiency.
