Giant Eagle, Heinen's Ink Tentative Labor Pact with UFCW

Giant Eagle Inc. and Heinen's Fine Foods have reached a tentative contract deal with the United Food and Commercial Workers union.

Details of the grocers' agreements with UFCW Local 880 will be mailed to employees in advance of a vote later this month, according to local press reports.

The tentative deal, which the union's bargaining committees have unanimously recommended for ratification, covers 8,700 Cleveland-area Giant Eagle and Heinen's employees and Giant Eagle's Akron-area meat and deli department workers.

A federal mediator has been overseeing the negotiations for three contracts covering more than 14,000 Ohio grocery store associates that expired Sept. 14. Employees have since been working under contract extensions, which provide for retroactive wage increases.

Pittsburgh-based Giant Eagle Inc. has 94 Northeast Ohio stores while the Warrensville Heights, Ohio-base Heinen's operates 17 grocery stores.

Negotiations are also continuing on contracts for associates at Giant Eagle's Akron-area stores and Albrecht's Acme Fresh Markets, Fishers Foods, and Stop-N-Shop stores.
