Giant Eagle Cuts More Prices In Columbus; Save-A-Lot Set To Open Two New Sites
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- For the fourth time in less than two years, Pittsburgh-based Giant Eagle is reducing prices by 15 percent on some 4,000 items on a market-specific basis here.
"We have plans to continue to grow in Columbus, so we want to make sure that we remain competitive," Kevin Srigley, Giant Eagle's s.v.p. of marketing, was quoted as saying in local news reports.
Giant Eagle's latest round of price cuts in Columbus follows on the heels of a slew of new stores planned for the central Ohio market, including Costco Wholesale Corp., three new Wal-Mart Supercenters, and a new Kroger Marketplace that opened in the Brewery District. Additionally, there are five more projects on deck for Columbus market leader Kroger later this year.
Supervalu subsidiary Save-A-Lot will also add two stores in the Columbus area; one at 1254 Morse Rd. on the North Side, which will open May 24, and another at 1179 E. Main St. on the Near East Side, which will open in the fall. The St. Louis-based retailer, which already has five stores in Columbus, is the nation's largest and fastest-growing limited-assortment grocery chain in the United States, with 1,150 stores in 40 states from Maine to California.
