Giant-Carlisle/Martin's Food Markets Raise Money for Troops

CARLISLE, Pa. -- Giant Food Stores, LLC here donated $125,000 to support troop morale at a rally held Saturday, May 6 at the Pennsylvania State Capitol in Harrisburg. At the event Giant Food c.e.o. Tony Schiano; Lance Cpl. Daniel Landa, a Giant associate and Marine who has served in Iraq; and Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) presented a check for that amount to regional USO representatives. The money was raised through customer contributions during an in-store "Support Our Troops" program at all Giant Food Stores and Martin's Food Markets.

"Giant is deeply committed to supporting our servicemen and -women and their families, all of whom work to keep our country safe and risk themselves to protect the democratic values we cherish," noted Schiano in a statement. "We cannot do enough to say thank you to our troops, to their families, and to their commitment to defending our way of life."

The donation will be split between the Liberty USO, which provides services to soldiers and their families throughout Pennsylvania, and the Metro D.C. USO serving soldiers and their families in Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Last year Giant shoppers and associates gave $75,000 to the "Support Our Troops" campaign. At the company's recent annual business meeting, Giant paid tribute to 27 company associates who have served or are currently serving in the military.
