Gelson's Markets Sees Higher Sales, Profits in Q2

LOS ANGELES -- Arden Group, Inc., the parent company of regional retailer Gelson's Markets, said yesterday that sales and income were up slightly at the grocer for the second quarter ended July 1, 2006.

Sales for the 13 weeks ended July 1 were $119.1 million, a 2.4 percent increase from last year. Sales for the 36-week period were $237.2 million, a 2.1 percent increase. The company noted that the second quarter of 2006 included Easter sales, which occurred in the first quarter of 2005. In addition, it attributed sales growth in part to product pricing decisions and an increase in customer count.

Net income for the 13-week period was $4.7 million, compared to $4.5 million in the same period last year. For the 36-week period, net income was slightly down, at $9.9 million, compared to $10.0 million.

Gelson's Markets operates 18 full-service supermarkets in Southern California carrying both perishable and grocery products.
