FreshDirect Launches Preferred Building Program

LONG ISLAND CITY, N.Y. -- Online food retailer FreshDirect here said yesterday that it's teaming with local developers to launch a program to streamline delivery services to select buildings within its largely urban marketing area.

Called the FreshDirect Preferred Building Program, the initiative has Fresh Direct working so far with the Developers Group, a Brooklyn, N.Y.-based residential sales and marketing firm, to install refrigerator and freezer units in common areas, dedicated to receive and hold FreshDirect deliveries. The e-retailer will provide size, manufacturer, and model recommendations, and will also provide buildings access to volume discounts with prescreened refrigeration manufacturers. Buildings participating in the program will receive reserved early-delivery timeslots, eliminating the need for residents to wait at home for their deliveries, the company said.

"We created the Preferred Building Program in response to demand from developers and customers alike," explained FreshDirect president Steve Michaelson. "Our service receives praise from the ever-growing FreshDirect customer base for its ease of use, convenience, and high-quality food. By working with developers, we hope to make using FreshDirect even easier and keep our food fresher for our customers. Now our customers don't have to wait for the food -- the food will wait for them."

"We believe this amenity will help to attract the type of residents who choose to live in our luxury buildings," said David Behin, e.v.p. business development for the Developers Group.

FreshDirect serves most of Manhattan, well as parts of Queens, Brooklyn, and the Bronx; and sections of New Jersey and Westchester. The company now has over 250,000 customers, and has fulfilled close to 3 million orders since opening for business in September 2002.
