Former Fleming Warehouse to Close
WAUKESHA, Wis. -- The former Fleming Cos. warehouse here will likely close this month after the facility is sold to Supervalu, a union official has told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Union officials have received unofficial reports that Supervalu will close the Waukesha facility and transfer its business to an underused Supervalu distribution center in Pleasant Prairie. The warehouse's probable closing, tentatively set for Sept. 12, would occur after Supervalu buys the warehouse from C&S Wholesale Grocers, which acquired it from Fleming, said Sebastian Busalacchi, president of Teamsters Local 200, which represents the warehouse's 180 employees.
The closing is the latest in a string of grocery-related job losses in the Milwaukee area. Last week Kohl's Food Stores, a division of A&P, closed the last of its 23 Milwaukee-area supermarkets and its Wauwatosa warehouse. Also, three Sentry Foods stores in West Milwaukee, Monona, and Beloit are scheduled to close by Sept. 27.
