Food Lion's Newest Bloom Store Targets College Students

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The fifth of five Bloom pilot stores from Salisbury, N.C.-based Food Lion opens here today near the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. A grand-opening ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m.

The store, located on N. Tryon Street in the Mallard Pointe Shopping Center, is a remodel of a former Food Lion store.

In addition to a full assortment of name brand and Food Lion brand groceries, fresh produce, and meats, the University-area Bloom store offers a full-service pharmacy, Boston Market home meal items in the deli, a walk-in beer cooler, and other services to assist shoppers with their busy schedules. These include DVD rentals, photo processing, postage stamps, gift cards, money orders, and transit tickets.

Earlier this year, Food Lion LLC announced plans to open five pilot stores to test its new store concept, design, and brand name: "Bloom, A Food Lion Market." The first Bloom store opened May 26 in Charlotte.

Bloom offers competitive prices, while placing an emphasis on eliminating many of the hassles of shopping. The store takes a new approach to store design, layout, and merchandising. For example, everyday items, such as milk, bread, eggs, beer and home meal solutions, are located near the front door in an intuitively designed area called Table Top Circle. The convenience area has its own checkout, aiding customers in a hurry.

Bloom is also testing some of the leading-edge technologies in the retail industry. The objective behind the technologies is to enhance the shopping experience and help customers find products, get information and check out with greater ease.

In other Food Lion news, the retailer said yesterday it is donating more than 5.5 tons of Food Lion canned products to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina as part of Food Lion Hunger Relief Day at the N.C. State Fair on Oct. 21.

Hunger Relief Day at the Fair is one of the largest one-day canned-food drives in the state, held each year to benefit the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina. This is Food Lion's first year sponsoring the popular event.

Food Lion LLC is a subsidiary of Delhaize America, the U.S. division of Brussels-based Delhaize Group. Food Lion operates more than 1,200 stores, under the Food Lion and Bloom names, 11 Southeast and Mid-Atlantic states.
