Food Lion Campaign to Support Local Food Banks
SALISBURY, N.C. -- From June 6 through July 8, all Food Lion stores will participate in the "Hunger Has a Cure" campaign to support local food banks affiliated with the America's Second Harvest Network. All monetary and food donations will stay in the communities where given to feed the hungry.
Food Lion customers can support their local food banks during the campaign either by making monetary contributions at the register or by purchasing ready-made, discounted boxes of food for $4.99 a box. Customers can purchase $1 icons or contribute any amount they wish at the register.
This is Food Lion's fourth-annual Hunger Has a Cure campaign. During the 2005 campaign, Food Lion customers and employees contributed more than $127,000 in cash and more than 67,000 boxes of food. The total value of the cash donations and boxes of food equaled more than $510,000.
Overall in 2005, Food Lion was the second-largest retail food donor nationwide to America's Second Harvest.
June 6, the start of the Food Lion campaign, is National Hunger Awareness Day.
"As a grocer, Food Lion is well positioned to help feed the hungry. It's one way we help our neighbors," said Mark Messier, Food Lion v.p. of retail services, in a statement. "Food Lion acts on the belief that assisting the hungry should be a priority for food retailers. In feeding those in need through America's Second Harvest, we help build a spirit of partnership and strengthen our communities."
