FMI Honors Craig Schnuck With Sidney R. Rabb Award

ST. LOUIS -- The Food Marketing Institute presented Craig Schnuck, chairman of the executive committee at Schnuck Markets, Inc. based here with its prestigious Sidney R. Rabb Award.

Supervalu's chief executive and FMI board chair Jeff Noddle presented Schnuck with the award at the association's 2007 Midwinter Executive Conference in Orlando, Fla., in honor of Schnuck's supermarket industry leadership in technology, industry relations, diversity and community service.

During the presentation, Noddle retraced Schnuck's accomplished food industry career, including his nine years of service on the board of governors of the Uniform Code Council (UCC), the agency that oversees the industry's most fundamental technologies, including the Universal Product Code. He chaired the council for an unprecedented two terms (1995-1997 and 1999-2000).

"Craig helped set the council on a new course to support a vastly changed industry and make the transition to e-commerce in a global marketplace," said Noddle. "He was a strong advocate for global scanning, technology, and synchronizing data -- helping lead the industry "toward levels of efficiency that were unthinkable a decade ago."

Noddle continued: "He has championed diversity at the national and local levels --promoting minority business development in St. Louis and co-chairing the Initiative for a Competitive Inner City to redevelop blighted areas of St. Louis."

As chair of the United Way of Greater St. Louis in September 2001, Schnuck and his family company jump-started the charitable organization's Sept. 11 campaign with a $100,000 contribution and a customer scan-and-give program that raised the total to more than $320,000, in addition to the $2 million that Schnucks associates donated.

Said Noddle: "When Hurricane Katrina struck, Schnucks was among the first companies to donate $1 million in cash, goods, and services to aid evacuees and rescue efforts."

Schnuck said the evening brought back fond memories. "Receiving the Sydney R. Rabb award from FMI was an honor for me and for my family. I was in attendance when the award was presented to my uncle and to my dad. I know how much the award meant to each of them. I have tried to follow in their footsteps in contributing to the communities we serve and to the industry."

Craig Schnuck is the 35th person to receive the Sydney R. Rabb award, and as the third member of the same family to be honored, has helped to make industry history. His father, the late Donald Schnuck, was recognized in 1983, and his uncle, the late Edward Schnuck, was among the first recipients of the award in 1977.

FMI established the Sidney R. Rabb award in 1977 to honor supermarket industry leaders for outstanding service to the community, consumers, and the industry. Its namesake, a visionary industry leader in the 20th century, pioneered the consumer- and community-driven role of the supermarket as chief executive of the Stop & Shop Supermarket Co.
