Farmer Jack Offering Flu Shots at 56 Michigan Stores
DETROIT -- In a joint community relations effort, Farmer Jack Supermarkets here and the Greater Oakland Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) have teamed up for the 12th consecutive year to provide flu and pneumonia immunizations for residents of southeast Michigan.
The flu shot program will be offered at 56 Farmer Jack stores in southeastern Michigan, Wednesday, Oct. 11 through Tuesday, Nov. 7. Shots will be administered by members of Greater Oakland's VNA, who collectively have provided over 100,000 flu shots in the past 12 years.
Flu immunization costs $25 and pneumonia immunizations are $35. The shots are fully covered for Medicare B cardholders who don't belong to an HMO, as well as for patients with HAP and Care Choice Insurances.
"For the 12th consecutive year, we are pleased to provide our customers with the convenience of securing a flu shot at our stores," said Tom Lenkevich, Farmer Jack's v.p. of operations. "It is important to note that our longstanding affiliation with the Oakland VNA gives our shoppers a very efficient flu shot program at a wide cross-section of our locations. We will have licensed registered nurses supported by our pharmacy personnel at each store."
Added Lenkevich: "Whether it's offering fresh, healthy foods, a full-service pharmacy with access to the pharmacist, or providing a community outreach service like flu shots, Farmer Jack is dedicated to healthy living in all the communities that surround our stores."
"The flu, or influenza, is a virus that attacks the respiratory system and causes such symptoms as fever, chills, headache, aching muscles, nausea, dry cough, nasal discharge, sore throat, and fatigue," said Don VanHemel, the chain's director of pharmacy. "We encourage our customers, especially those who are considered high risk for contracting the flu, such as the elderly, people with chronic disease, health care workers, teachers, and child care providers, as well as the general public, to take advantage of this convenient opportunity. It is also important to remind parents that we will be giving flu shots to children 9 years and older this year."
Numbers will be provided to each attendee visiting the stores, each of which will furnish 400 flu shots at each session.
With 66 locations, Farmer Jack is an operating unit of the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., which operates 405 stores in nine states and the District of Columbia under such banners as: A&P, Waldbaum's, The Food Emporium, Super Foodmart, Super Fresh, Farmer Jack, Sav-A-Center, and Food Basics.
