Farmer Jack to Close 13 Southeast Michigan Area Stores
DETROIT - A&P unit Farmer Jack on Tuesday informed employees that it will close 13 southeast Michigan area stores by mid-February as part of the company's continuing efforts to restore profitability. Last week Farmer Jack announced it will close its two Lansing, Mich. stores.
"Despite these difficult but necessary actions, Farmer Jack remains committed to serving the citizens of Detroit and minimizing job losses," said Mike Carter, president of Farmer Jack. "We continue to work with Local 876 of the UFCW as well as Mayor Kilpatrick's office to explore the possibility of converting these locations to a different grocery store format." The company did not provide any details, but said it expects to share more information next week.
Certain employees at the 13 stores will have the option to transfer to another Farmer Jack store or accept a voluntarily severance agreement, the company said. Farmer Jack will also work with state and local agencies on job placement and training programs for any displaced employees.
The stores to be closed are: Wayne, on E. Michigan Avenue; Lincoln Park, on W. Fort; Detroit, on Telegraph at Seven Mile; Harper Woods, on Harper at Moross; Detroit on W. Outer Drive at Southfield; Highland Park, on Woodward; Hamtramck, on Joseph Campau; Detroit, on Rosa Parks Blvd; Melvindale, on Oakwood Blvd; Sterling Heights, on Fourteen Mile Road at Ryan; Brighton, on W. Grand River; Rochester Hills, on Rochester Road at Auburn; and Ypsilanti, on Emerick Road.
The company indicated that these closures would result in restructuring charges, which will generally be incurred during the fourth quarter of its current fiscal year.
