EPA Recognizes Acme Markets as Energy Star Partner of 2006
MALVERN, Pa. -- Acme Markets based here has earned an award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for protecting the environment through energy efficiency.
Acme received the EPA's Excellence in Energy Star outreach 2006 Award for outstanding contributions to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by promoting energy-efficient products at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. last week.
EPA lauded Acme -- an Energy Star partner honored for promoting the "Change a Light, Change the World" program that met EPA's guidelines for energy efficiency -- for making outstanding contributions to the 2005 Energy Star's "Change a Light, Change the World" campaign by introducing it to customers in 134 Mid-Atlantic supermarkets and the surrounding communities.
The EPA said Acme's innovative approach helped customers make the connection that saving energy is good for their families and the environment. For every Energy Star qualified compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL) that shoppers purchased during the month of October in a four-state radius, Acme donated $1 to one of three well-known environmental organizations in the area.
The chain communicated promotions to a large audience through a variety of in-store and mass mail channels, using inspirational campaign imagery and language. Last year alone, with the help of Energy Star, Americans saved $12 billion on their energy bills and enough peak energy to power 28 million homes. Through those savings they avoided greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those of more than 23 million vehicles.
"Acme is proud of our partnership with Energy Star," said Judy Spires, Acme's recently appointed president. "We know that through the use of Energy Star compact fluorescent light bulbs, consumers can save money and contribute to a healthy environment. We are proud to help raise awareness about energy efficiency through our efforts."
The Excellence in Energy Star Outreach is given to a variety of organizations to recognize their efforts to improve energy efficiency and reduce pollution, resulting in significant cost savings. Award winners are selected from over 8,000 organizations that participate in the Energy Star program.
Acme Markets operates 134 supermarkets in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
