Employees at Seattle Indie to Work Under Present Contract While Big Chains Negotiate with Union

SEATTLE - Seattle-area independent grocer Top Food & Drug has reached an interim agreement with more than 800 of its workers, in which the employees will continue working under their current contract until a new deal emerges from negotiations involving Safeway, Albertsons, QFC and Fred Meyer.

The agreement covers members of United Food & Commercial Workers (UFCW) locals 1105 and 367, which work in nine of Top's stores.

Top Foods employees still must ratify any new contract, company spokeswoman Becky Skaggs told the Seattle Times.

Representatives from the four larger chains and the UFCW are scheduled to resume contract talks Friday.

Last month, workers reached similar interim agreements at 19 independent stores in Washington's King County, including certain Thriftway, Metropolitan Market, Red Apple, Market Place and Town & Country stores.
