Earth Fare Consolidates Greenville, S.C. Operations

ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Privately held natural foods supermarket chain Earth Fare, based here, said yesterday it is selling one of its stores in Greenville, S.C., in an effort to consolidate its operations in the town into its much larger Pelham Road location.

"The Pelham Road store represents the best we have to offer our customers," said Earth Fare c.e.o. Michael Cianciarulo in a statement. "From great selection with wide, friendly aisles, it represents the face of Earth Fare today." The smaller unit in Lewis Plaza, on the other hand, "does not allow the company to reach our customers with the same consistent products and offerings as our larger Pelham Road store," he said.

Cianciarulo added that market research had shown that the two stores share more than 60 percent of the same customer base.

Earth Fare said A&S Natural Health is buying the Lewis Plaza unit, for an undisclosed amount. A&S Natural Health is based in the Piedmont region of North Carolina.

The location will close today, and Earth Fare will offer its staff positions in the Pelham Road location, which is nearly triple the size of the Lewis Plaza store.

Founded in 1975, Earth Fare has grown into a chain of natural foods supermarkets located in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee. The company said it has stores under construction in South Asheville and Charlotte, N.C., and more in development.
