Dierbergs First in St. Louis With Zero-grams-trans-fat Doughnut

ST. LOUIS -- Dierbergs Markets here became the first St. Louis supermarket -- and the first in St. Louis, the company believes -- to offer a fresh zero-grams-trans-fat doughnut yesterday.

The company rolled out over 15 varieties of fresh bakery doughnuts, including glazed, chocolate iced, powdered sugar, cinnamon sugar, Bavarian creme, and a popular St. Louis favorite: Long Johns (in chocolate, white, or caramel-iced varieties).

The new doughnuts are "better than ever," according to a company statement, with a reformulated recipe and new cooking processes that "deliver all of the expected [doughnut] flavor and the unexpected benefit of zero grams trans fat per serving."

The zero-grams-trans-fat designation means that a product contains very small amounts (less than 0.5 grams) of trans fat per serving.
"Traditionally, baked goods have plenty of trans fats, [and] that's part of what makes them [taste] good," said president Greg Dierberg in a statement. "Our goal was to create a delicious [doughnut] with zero grams of trans fat, and that's what our bakery pros have accomplished."

The retailer, which operates 23 stores in the St. Louis metropolitan area, said it would continue to sell boxed Krispy Kreme glazed doughnuts alongside its new Dierbergs doughnuts.

Dierberg said it was also the first supermarket in St. Louis to offer glazed Krispy Kreme doughnuts and enjoyed a period of exclusivity.

The primary source of artificial trans fats are partially hydrogenated vegetable oils. Studies suggest that trans fats can raise "bad" cholesterol and lower "good" cholesterol, increasing risks for heart disease and stroke.
