Dedicated Dairy Supply Chain Practice Group Taking Shape

WEST CHESTER, Pa. -- Prescient, a provider of supply chain and advanced commerce solutions for retailers and suppliers here, said it is organizing the first-ever Dairy Supply Chain Practice Group to address the dairy industry's unique manufacturing and distribution challenges.

Prescient spokeswoman Bridget McNie told Progressive Grocer that the company was looking to put the finishing touches on the group by the mid-fourth quarter of 2006. Currently the company is contacting suppliers to join the group, she said.

"After consulting with our clients in the dairy industry on a day-to-day basis, we realized they face a very specific set of demands," noted Prescient director of sales operations and product management Karen Sickles in a statement. "Issues such as short shelf-life, quick turns, changing consumer preferences, regional preferences, seasonality, and product safety really set them apart. Prescient decided to unite this group to help dairy suppliers find innovative ways to overcome those challenges without sacrificing quality and safety."

Sickles will lead Prescient's Dairy Practice Group, which will provide dairy industry suppliers with a new forum to share best practices and exchange ideas. The group will concentrate on several distribution issues having a substantial effect on today's dairy industry, particularly the use of scan sales data for lowering out-of-stocks, demand-replenishing planning, reducing shrink, managing inventory, maintaining high service levels, and scan-based trading.
