Celebrating Its 70th, Giant-Landover Set to Grow
LANDOVER, Md. -- Giant Food, LLC here is marking its 70th year in business in 2006, and some celebratory changes are in store. The retailer noted in a statement that it would be opening new stores and remodeling older locations incorporating the latest merchandising trends, as well as rolling out new programs to educate shoppers in regard to such topics as health and food safety.
"We will open 10 new stores and remodel over a dozen stores by the end of 2007," said Giant's e.v.p. and general manager, Bill Holmes. "Our stores of the future, such as our newest prototype store in Millville, Del., will offer more customer-oriented features, such as expanded fresh produce departments with a farm stand ambiance; more prepared foods in our meat and deli departments, including Boston Market entrees; cheese bars with more than 70 varieties of imported and domestic cheeses; sushi bars where chefs prepare delicious foods on site; Staples office products; and even in-store cafes and coffee bars in a state-of-the-art energy-efficient building."
Giant's past innovations have included being the first U.S. supermarket chain to have computer-assisted checkouts in all of its stores by 1979, and being the first East Coast retail chain to test ScriptCenter, a kiosk allowing customers to pick up prescription refills even when the pharmacy is closed, last year.
Ahold-owned Giant operates 192 supermarkets in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia. Included in those 192 stores are 163 full-service pharmacies.
