Cameo Apple Harvest Yields Healthy Volume

WENATCHEE, Wash. -- Growers for the Cameo Apple Marketing Association (CAMA) here will harvest more than 1.25 million boxes this year, making it a key part of the apple category.

"It is important to emphasize Cameo because it generates incremental category growth over the entire season, not just fall or spring," said CAMA's Kevin Precht. Some 85 percent of the Cameo crop will be placed into controlled atmosphere (CA) storage this fall to deliver the highest-quality apples from January to July, said Precht, which will provide retailers an option beyond Southern hemisphere-grown apples.

Cameo is unique because it's one of the only varieties that offers retailers variety-specific promotion and quality control programs, said Precht, citing CAMA's winter promotion offering weight-loss-themed point-of-sale material featuring a Cameo apple chicken salad recipe -- a portable, healthy meal idea. The materials are designed to draw attention to the apple category during the important New Year's diet resolution months, added Precht.

Discovered as a chance seedling (tree grown from an apple seed) in Washington state in 1987, Cameo apples are firm, crisp, and aromatic.
