Bruno's, Raley's to Offer Biometric Check Cashing System

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. and WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Bruno's Supermarkets and Raley's Family of Fine Stores have begun pilot testing the Paycheck Secure biometric check cashing system from Herndon, Va.-based BioPay.

Bruno's has been testing the Paycheck Secure system for the past eight weeks at 37 of its 185 stores in Birmingham and surrounding suburbs. The chain's loss prevention executive said it has already seen promising results and plans to continue the pilot for six months, before rolling it out chainwide.

"The main reason behind the pilot was we were not able to offer check cashing at all of our stores because of fraudulent checks," Bruno's dir. of loss prevention Kevin Ofenloch told Progressive Grocer. "A lot of our customers requested payroll check cashing services, and since Bi-Lo, our sister Ahold USA company is having success with the [BioPay] system, we decided to pilot it, as well."

Ofenloch said he expects the new check cashing services –- which allow consumers to cash government and payroll checks -- to drive additional traffic into the store. The chain will promote the system with in-store signage.

Raley's will offer Paycheck Secure in nine stores in Albuquerque and Taos, New Mexico.

The two companies join hundreds of other regional retailers already using Paycheck Secure, including Bi-Lo in the Southeast, Malone's Supermarkets throughout Texas, and Marsh Supermarkets in the Midwest.

To date, Paycheck Secure has been used to successfully complete more than 10 million transactions worth more than $3 billion.
