Bob Wegman Leaves Bulk of Estate to Charity
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The late Robert B. Wegman, paterfamilias of the Wegmans Food Markets empire here, was a well-known philanthropist in life, and his will ensures that his charitable giving won't end with his death.
His will, filed last month in Monroe County Surrogate Court in Rochester, leaves the bulk of his estate to the Wegman Family Charitable Foundation, which concentrates on projects involving youth and education, two of Wegman's pet causes, according to the Gannett News Service. The foundation is expected to receive all of Wegman's voting and nonvoting shares in the company.
According to Wegman's spokeswoman Jo Natale, the foundation won't accept grant requests, but instead will be deciding independently which projects to fund.
Wegman additionally made bequests of $50,000 annually to his brother and sister, and left his home and two Florida properties to his wife.
It is anticipated to take at least seven months to officially close the estate.
Wegmans, a privately held grocery chain, employs 35,000 associates and operates 71 stores in five states.
