Bob Wegman, Chairman of Wegmans Food Markets, Dies

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Robert B. "Bob" Wegman, the chairman of Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. here, died yesterday at Strong Memorial Hospital. He was 87 years old. According to the company, he had been in failing health of late.

"We will miss him terribly, but are comforted knowing he has left the company he so treasured in good hands," said a statement from Wegmans. Bob's son, Danny Wegman, is currently c.e.o., while granddaughter Colleen serves as president.?

Wegmans, Rochester's third-biggest employer, was founded by Bob Wegman's father and uncle in 1916. With Bob Wegman at the helm, the privately held chain expanded into a major regional retailer encompassing 70 stores from New York to Virginia. Additionally, Fortune magazine has cited the company as one of the country's best places to work.

A major philanthropist in his community, Robert Wegman contributed millions of dollars to worker scholarships, educational institutes, and other groups. He also made the Wegmans LPGA tournament a major draw by increasing the prize money and luring star players.

The company said that until recently Bob Wegman kept active in the company, working at the office and visiting Wegmans stores. At presstime funeral arrangements were pending.
