BI-LO to Assist Red Cross With Disaster Relief

MAULDIN, S.C. - BI-LO supermarkets will begin a donation program in stores this week to encourage customers and associates to assist the American Red Cross in their disaster relief efforts in response to a plea from the charitable relief organization.

To encourage giving, BI-LO has announced a $25,000 match in funds donated. "So many of our customers and associates have been affected by the storms of the past month, either with high winds, tornadoes, flooding, or power outages, and we want to step up to offer a helping hand," said Dean Cohagan, president and c.e.o. of BI-LO/Bruno's. "With Hurricane Ivan approaching, we want to make sure the Red Cross has the resources to continue providing shelter and food for people needing help."

According to a Red Cross letter sent to businesses last week, Hurricanes Charley and Frances have used up its funds to provide emergency needs such as food, shelter, clothing, and other basic necessities to disaster-stricken areas. Over the past few weeks, the Red Cross has opened 253 shelters and served more than 3 million hot meals and snacks because of hurricanes and severe weather.

At BI-LO, shoppers can request to scan a special Red Cross card at the checkout to donate $1 or more to the relief effort. One hundred percent of the funds collected will be donated to the American Red Cross, and BI-LO will match the donations up to $25,000.
