A&P Aiming at $325K Score in Charity Golf Tourney for MDA
MONTVALE, N.J. --The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co. here will once again sponsor the annual Food Emporium Golf Classic to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). On July 17 more than 400 golfers from the vendor community will tee off in a charity golf tournament at Fiddler's Elbow Country Club in Far Hills, N.J.
The tournament, is expected to raise about $325,000 for 2006; it raised about $285,000 last year. As well as A&P, companies with participating golfers have also contributed supplies and sponsorships. The event also includes dinner and several auction events after the tournament. Area businesses have donated all of the auction items. All proceeds from the tournament and auctions will go to MDA.
The annual tournament began in 1996. With the money raised this year, the golf classic will have raised almost $2 million for MDA.
The tournment isn't the only way that A&P has helped raise money for the association, however. In February and March 2006, the grocer donated over $230,000 that A&P stores raised in their "Shamrocks Against Dystrophy" initiative.
