Amazon.com Planning Food Store Web Site

SEATTLE - Internet retailer Amazon.com plans to launch an online food store as early as August, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.

The site will link leading gourmet retailers of everything from frozen dinners and meats to cookies and desserts. Amazon will take a cut of the orders processed through its Web site [m] much as it does with apparel [m] but leave the warehousing and shipping to its retail partners. Amazon has been talking with retailers including Omaha Steaks and Dan's Chocolates about putting their catalogs in the Amazon food store.

Many upscale food purveyors, including Omaha Steaks and The Cheesecake Factory, say online sales are the fastest growing part of their business.
