Albertsons Testing Electronic Shelf Labels

BOISE, Idaho - Albertsons is testing electronic shelf labels at three stores, including an Albertsons/Osco in Litchfield Park, Ariz. and two stores in Southern California, according to a report in the Arizona Republic.

The company is trying to see if labor costs are reduced, since stock clerks won't have to change prices manually. The labels appear on dry-grocery aisles and should be in place by the end of this week, the company said.

"The reaction from customers has been very positive," Scott Czosnyka, director of the Litchfield Park store, told the paper. "The big thing we've heard is that the store looks cleaner because we've replaced the paper tags."

Labels display price along with cost per ounce. Employees can reorder items by scanning a bar code on the tag. The tags at Albertsons/Osco are manufactured by Dayton, Ohio-based NCR.
