Albertsons Rolls Out Dollar Zones in All Stores

BOISE, Idaho - Albertsons, Inc. said yesterday that it has completed the rollout of a new dollar zone concept in all 2,500 of its food and drug stores in 37 states, covering all banners, among them Jewel-Osco, Acme, Albertsons-Osco, Albertsons-Sav-on, Sav-on Drugs, Osco Drug, Super Saver, Shaw's, and Star Market. After a year of successful testing, a new proprietary brand called "10 for 10 Mix and Match" was selected to brand the merchandising concept.

Items in the new sections include fresh foods, dry grocery, and general merchandise. Also, to bolster the breadth and depth of values provided, "10 for 10 Mix and Match," offers can also be found throughout the store on an in-line basis. Assortments change frequently and are announced in weekly ads.

Larry Johnston, Albertsons chairman, president, and c.e.o., said: "In recent years consumers have voted in increasing numbers for the dollar store concept. Many of the products sold in these stores are the same products sold in food and drug stores. This trend was too strategic for us to ignore. With our size, buying leverage, and shopping frequency, we felt we could continue to strengthen and differentiate our food and drug formats by giving customers exciting new values across a wider range of categories. This drove us to do extensive research, work closely with vendors, and conduct tests over the past year. The result is a successful and unique concept called '10 for 10 Mix and Match.' This format has resulted in increased traffic, share, and margin."
