6 ‘Very Angry’ Strikers Arrested During Shaw’s Strike Protest
Six Shaw’s strikers were arrested early yesterday after a disturbance arose outside the Supervalu banner’s Methuen, Mass., food distribution center, according to a local report.
About 200 strikers gathered at the site after midnight and soon grew “loud, tumultuous and very angry,” Police Capt. Randy Haggar told the North Andover, Mass., Eagle-Tribune.
At approximately 3 a.m., six strikers formed a human roadblock to prevent Shaw’s trucks from leaving the facility. Police arrested the strikers, who were charged with disorderly conduct. Their names were not disclosed. Additional police officers were called to the scene to help keep the peace.
Strikers have apparently intensified their efforts before busy the July 4 holiday weekend. The labor action at the DC is now in its 14th week, according to the Web site of South Easton, Mass.-based United Food and Commercial Workers Local 791.
