5 A Day Enlists Peanuts Gang for Wal-Mart Halloween Campaign

WILMINGTON, Del. - Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and the rest of the Peanuts gang are joining forces with the world's biggest retailer this Halloween season to encourage children to treat themselves to good health by eating a colorful variety of at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables every day.

"Treat Yourself to Good Health" with Charlie Brown, which will take place on Oct. 16 at more than 1,650 Wal-Mart Supercenters and Neighborhood Markets nationwide, is the result of an alliance between the nonprofit educational Produce for Better Health Foundation (PBH) and Wal-Mart.

Families who visit the produce departments of Wal-Mart Supercenters and Neighborhood Markets across the country on Oct. 16 from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. will receive an educational activity and coloring book featuring Halloween-costumed Peanuts characters. Activity pages teach the basics of eating 5 A Day The Color Way, and coloring pages with a favorite Peanuts Halloween scene feature a Color Way "Healthy Tasty Tip." The booklet also includes a collection of Color Way recipes developed with assistance from PBH's registered dietitians and nutrition education experts.

Parents will receive a copy of PBH's 5 A Day The Color Way guide, which introduces families to the five health-promoting fruit and vegetable color groupings, the foods in each group, and other helpful information including a serving size guide. Shoppers can also sample fruits and vegetables and related products from Duda, Fresh Express, Paramount Farms, Pero Farms, Ocean Spray, Tropicana, Hidden Valley Ranch, Marie's Salad Dressings, Sam's Choice beverages, Splenda no-calorie sweetener, and Zoo Pal Plates, which provide support for the program.

"Treat Yourself to Good Health" with Charlie Brown is the second of the 2004-2005 series of 5 A Day The Color Way nutrition education promotions by Wal-Mart, PBH and health-minded Wal-Mart suppliers -- implemented by Mars Advertising , Southfield, Mich. In August, Wal-Mart hosted a "5 A Day Healthy Heroes" campaign featuring Marvel Super Heroes Spider-Man, Incredible Hulk, Captain America, Storm and Wolverine, delivering the message to kids that colorful fruits and vegetables are "cool fuel." Almost 350,000 "Healthy Heroes" coloring and activity books were distributed, and more than 190,000 copies of PBH's 5 A Day The Color Way accordion guide were handed out to parents visiting Wal-Mart Supercenters.
