Winn-Dixie to Raise Money for Central Fla. Tornado Victims

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Winn-Dixie Stores said yesterday it is launching a program to raise donations as a way to assist the American Red Cross' Disaster Relief Fund to benefit victims of the tornadoes that swept through Central Florida last week.

The chain's program, "Neighbors Helping Neighbors," will launch in all Central Florida stores. Shoppers will be able to donate any amount between 50 cents and $500 to the fund at checkout.

"Our neighbors face a long and difficult recovery process, and we want to do everything we can to help them," said Terry Derreberry, Winn-Dixie director of neighborhood marketing, in a statement. "As a business leader and members of the community, Winn-Dixie values the opportunity to join forces with our customers to assist the neighborhoods we serve in times of crisis."

The tornadoes that touched down throughout Sumter, Lake, and Volusia Counties on Feb. 2 left extensive damage behind and killed nearly 40 people.
