Wild Oats Unit Wins Fair Trade Month Display Contest

OAKLAND, Calif. -- A Wild Oats store in Cincinnati, Ohio was the big winner in TransFair USA's retail display contest and consumer sweepstakes, which was held in October 2006 in celebration of Fair Trade Month.

The store's demo coordinator, Cathy Eubanks, wins an 8-day trip for two to Costa Rica, March 25 to April 1.

Entrants for the display contest were judged by an independent panel from Big Idea Marketing, based on creativity, visibility, consumer education, and the number of Fair Trade Certified products. More than 9,700 retail locations participated in the 2006 contest, and TransFair USA fulfilled almost 2,000 orders for marketing materials.

Other supermarkets that participated included PCC Natural Markets, Andronico's, Giant Eagle (last year's winner), Nugget Markets, and Wegmans.

In honor of Fair Trade Month, Eubanks' store director at Wild Oats asked her to build the display because she knew how passionate Eubanks felt about Fair Trade. Wild Oats set up the Discover Fair Trade display in the cafe area of their store, where they have a booming lunch business.

TransFair USA, a nonprofit organization, is one of 20 members of Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International (FLO), and the only independent, third-party certifier of Fair Trade products in the United States.
