Weis Markets Reopens 5 Former Mars Stores in MD

Weis Markets continues to expand its presence in Maryland with the reopening of five former Mars Super Markets in Baltimore County.

Meanwhile, the Pennsylvania-based regional grocer expected to close the deal on 38 Food Lion stores being divested as a result of the Ahold-Delhaize merger.

To staff the stores, Weis has hired more than 500 new associates who held previous employment with Mars.

Serving Communities

“We have converted and reopened our stores in record time to reduce to the inconvenience to the communities we serve,” said Kurt Schertle, Weis Markets’ COO. “We look forward to sharing our commitment of value, quality and customer service with residents in the area, and are extremely pleased to welcome more than 500 new Weis associates to our team.”

Family-owned Mars Super Markets, a 13-store chain that has operated in the Baltimore area since the 1940s, announced earlier this year that it would be closing all of its locations due to declining sales. The D’Anna family, which founded the banner in 1943, reportedly had been trying to sell the chain for some time.

The newly converted Weis Markets stores will continue to offer a wide variety of local products and will now include more than 3,000 Weis brand products.

Weis also plans to finalize the purchase of 38 Food Lion stores in September, six of which are located in the Baltimore region. Once those reopen as Weis locations, the retailer will operate 15 stores in the Baltimore region, essentially tripling its presence in the community within a few months’ time.

Founded in 1912, Sunbury, Pa.-based Weis Markets Inc. operates 167 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and West Virginia.
