Wegmans' Urban Boston Store Plans On Track
Wegmans Food Markets is on course to open its first urban store within the city of Boston in 2018, according to published reports. The 75,000-square-foot store will be a key part of the $500 million renovation and expansion of Landmark Center in the Fenway, a mixed-use redevelopment approved by the Boston Redevelopment Authority in 2013, which is slated to begin construction later this year (Pictured is an artist's rendering of the project.)
Wegmans spokeswoman Jo Natale told the Boston Business Journal that although there's no final design plan for the Boston store, it would be comparable in size to the grocer's 80,000-square-foot Chestnut Hill, Mass., location and would carry similar products, including wine. The Chestnut Hill store, Wegmans' second location in Massachusetts, opened in March 2014.
Rochester, N.Y.-based Wegmans is also on track to open a 122,000-square-foot location in Westwood, Mass., this October, for which it plans to hire for 550 full- and part-time associates. The grocer currently operates 86 stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, and Massachusetts
